Germany Return to the Knockout Stage

Four-time world champions Germany have secured their spot in the knockouts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a stunning comeback win against Ivory Coast. Germans secured two wins from their first two matches to advance to the knockout round of the World Cup for the first time after the 2014 triumphant campaign.

Nagelsmann's side didn’t have their best day on the pitch but still managed to get 3 points through substitutions that changed the game.

Ivory Coast Matches Germany Blow for Blow

Emerse Faé’s Ivory Coast remained competitive for the entire match and did an excellent job of keeping Germany's attacking stars quiet. Sangare, Kessie, and Oulai did a brilliant job in the Ivorian midfield to drive the ball forward and create an attacking threat.

In the attack, Diamonde opened the opportunity for Kessie's opener with a brilliant ball from the left flank. Amad also provided attacking rhythm on the right side, but the manager subbed him in the 75th minute, which was a highly questionable decision.

Ivory Coast remained defensively disciplined for most of the contest, frustrating Germany's attack and limiting clear-cut opportunities, but it was not enough to stop the late winner from Undav.

Missed Chances Prove Costly

Adingra had an open chance to score the winner in the match, but he tried to control the ball instead of taking a first-time shot at goal. Lack of precision in the final third is the reason why Ivory Coast failed to secure a point against Germany, which could have secured their knockout qualification.

Nmecha Shines Amid German Struggles

Nmecha in midfield had a brilliant day against Ivory Coast while other players suffered to cope with them. Germans had their chances but failed to convert past the Ivorian defense and goalkeeper. Havertz failed to perform up to the expectations when he had the chances to score.

Undav's Heroics Rescue Germany

Nagelsmann made impressive substitutions in the 60th minute by bringing Leweling, Undav, and Amiri to the pitch. The substitutions had an instant impact on the pitch with a goal from Undav assisted by Amiri. Later, Undav scored his second goal in the 94th minute, breaking Ivorian hearts and marking the entry of Germany into the knockouts since 2014.

Questions Remain for Germany

Germany cruised past Curaçao in their opening fixture, but this match exposed some of the challenges they face against physical and defensively organized opponents. The starting spot of Kai Havertz might be in danger after the game-changing performance from Undav in this game.

What's Next for Both Teams?

The entire defensive unit of Germany had an impressive display in Toronto. Germany will face defensively dominant Ecuador in the final match of the group stage, while the Ivorians will meet debutants Curacao to increase their point tally to 6 and earn the ticket for the knockout round.
