Mexico Take Control From the Opening Stages

The opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended with a dominating victory for Mexico over South Africa, where the hosts scored twice without conceding.

This match had big hype among football fans, as it's a repetition of the inaugural match of the 2010 World Cup held in South Africa. But the match failed to meet the hype because of disappointing performance from Hugo Broos's South African side.

Both teams came up with the expected lineup without major changes. From the start, Mexico was able to control the ball comfortably against South Africa. Meanwhile, the South African team struggled to cope with Mexico's intensity and possession play, as they don’t have the quality and experience to match the level of the hosts.

Quiñones Punishes Costly South African Error

The first goal of Mexico came from a careless turn of South African midfielder Sithole after receiving a pass from goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Collective pressure from the Mexican side helped midfielder Erik Lira win the ball from Sithole and pass to Julián Quiñones for the opening goal.

The opening goal exposed how vulnerable the South African defensive setup is in front of Mexico.

Sithole Endures a Night to Forget

In the second half, South Africa are down to 10 following the red card of Sithole for stopping the last man run of Guittierrez. It was a night to forget for the midfielder, who was sent off and made the error that led to the decisive goal.

Red Cards Add to South Africa's Problems

Hugo Broos was forced to take off Lyle Foster following the red card of Sithole, which cancels a major goal threat against Mexico. Hugo Broos substituted another comparatively compatible player, Jaydon Adams, for Zwane, which ended up in the red card of Zwane due to violent conduct against Alvarado in the 84th minute.

Jiménez Seals Victory for the Hosts

At the 67th minute, Jimenez’s first goal in the World Cup sealed the victory for the hosts in the opener.

Mexican defender Cesar Montes got a controversial red card for clipping Mudau, who was racing towards the box.

Despite the comfortable win, Mexico showed room for improvement ahead of tougher tests in Group A.

Erik Lira and Quiñones Shine for El Tri

Erik Lira anchored the midfield really well, and both strikers of the team were able to find the net. Alvarado also had a memorable night with an outstanding assist to Jimenez's header for his first-ever World Cup goal.

Quinones pulled off a man-of-the-match-level performance with a decisive goal and coordinating the final third with collective pressing. The goal-scoring form of the Al Qadsiah striker will be important for Mexico in their World Cup journey.
