Inter agree £27m Deal for Djed Spence
Djed Spence is set to join Inter Milan after the Italian champions agree to a transfer fee of £27 million for the versatile fullback; he will sign a 5-year deal with Inter that will tie him to the Nerazzurri until 2031, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Spence had an incredible journey in the knockout stages of the World Cup this summer, especially with his performances against Argentina in the semifinal. Despite a defeat by conceding a goal in the final minutes, these performances and appearances for Spurs in the last two seasons have definitely raised his stock, but the major talking point is the £27 million transfer fee.
The £27m valuation raises eyebrows
The £27m fee is likely to attract attention given Spence's recent international exposure and his ability to operate on either flank.
His situation at Spurs was helpless, De Zerbi prefers Pedro Porro as the first-choice right back and Udogie as the primary left back, which could limit the minutes of the English fullback next season, so the player pushed for a move.
Inter Milan came with serious interest to sign him as a long-term replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who left the club to join Real Madrid. Spurs were not able to raise their valuation from £27 million because there is no bid from any other clubs for the player’s signature.
For Tottenham, it was very important to close the deal as early as possible to make more movements in the transfer window to bring new signings in the attacking third of the team, as they are aiming to qualify for European competitions next season under De Zerbi. They have already bought high-quality players, including Tonali, Matheus Fernandes, and Van Hecke, to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season.
Rather than spending time raising the player’s valuation, Spurs decided to bag the money and reinvest in their ambitious project.
Why Inter See Spence as a Bargain
From the perspective of Inter Milan, the deal is considered a bargain considering the player’s quality and versatility; his recent performances in the World Cup stages were also convincing to Chivu to choose the English player as the ideal choice for wingback.
He possesses the versatility to play as both a left and right wingback. Spence is also known for his ability to overlap with his pace and deliver crosses to the box consistently.
