Manchester United have endured a difficult start to their Premier League campaign, suffering a 3-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City. With a long season ahead that also includes Champions League football, the pressure will only increase as the fixtures begin to pile up.

Adding to their early struggles is a growing list of injury concerns within the squad. Several players are dealing with fitness issues, limiting the options available to the manager and affecting United’s performances in the opening weeks of the season. Here is the latest update on Manchester United’s injury situation.

Amad Diallo

Injury: Ankle Injury Status: Injured Expected return: Tottenham Hotspur, October 10

Diallo sustained an ankle injury during the routine training ahead of the season opener against Hull City. The injury is expected to keep him out for around six weeks as per GOAL, which will affect United's opening weeks in the season.

He is one of United's key wide threats on the right, and his absence forces Carrick to depend on Shea Lacey and Bryan Mbeumo to provide width.

Matthijs de Ligt

Injury: Back Injury Status: Returning in Training Expected return: To be confirmed

He has been sidelined due to a long-term back injury since November 2025. Following the injury, he underwent several treatments, which failed to resolve the injury before undergoing surgery on his back in May 2026.

He also missed the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign due to the injury.

De Ligt is back to individual training on grass and has yet to train with the group.

“Matta's obviously been out for a long period of time, but he's training, and it's great to have him back,” Carrick said in a recent press briefing.

# Mason Mount

Injury: Minor Hamstring Tear Status: Returning in Training Expected return: Ipswich Town, August 30

Mount’s strong preseason campaign ended with a hamstring injury sustained against Paris Saint-Germain that forced him to miss the rest of the preseason and the opening Premier League game against Hull City.

He joined in training with the team after rapid progress in rehabilitation.

He is expected to feature for some minutes in the second half against Ipswich Town in Old Trafford.

Carlos Baleba

Injury: Ankle Ligament Injury Status: Injured Expected return: Manchester City, September 13

The new arrival to the Red Devils suffered an ankle ligament injury during his preseason with Brighton in August. Manchester United analyzed that his injury is not long-term and decided to proceed with his transfer for £70 million from the Seagulls.

He is expected to make his Manchester United debut in the Premier League against Manchester City in mid-September.

Manuel Ugarte

Injury: Torn ACL Status: Injured Expected return: To be confirmed

Ugarte suffered a serious ligament injury while representing the Uruguay national team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He is expected to miss 9-12 months of football due to the serious injury, and his presence is possibly expected at the end of the 2026-27 season.

Tom Heaton

Injury: Right Hamstring Injury Status: Injured Expected return: To be confirmed

The 40-year-old goalkeeper sustained a right hamstring injury against Paris Saint-Germain while trying to clear a ball; his injury looks more serious than first expected, so the player is undergoing more tests to understand the full extent of the damage

What This Means for Manchester United

United’s growing injury list could put extra pressure on Michael Carrick, especially with Champions League football adding to an already demanding schedule. The absence of key players reduces his options in attack, midfield, and defense, while the longer-term injuries could force the manager to rely more heavily on younger players and available squad members.
