FSG Confirm Michael Edwards' Departure
Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has officially confirmed that Michael Edwards has stepped down as CEO of football, bringing an end to his second spell overseeing Liverpool's football operations and marking another major leadership change at the club.
Liverpool’s sporting director is also set, preparing to leave the role to join Saudi Premier League side Al Hilal, as reported by The Athletic.
Edwards' Legacy at Liverpool
Michael Edwards joined Liverpool in 2011 as a performance analyst from Tottenham Hotspur. His work with the Reds earned him promotion to the role of director of technical performance and then technical director before becoming sporting director in 2016.
Edward’s involvement in transfers and operations was crucial in the era of Jürgen Klopp, which led the team to win the Champions League after 14 years of waiting in 2022 and the Premier League title after 30 years in 2020. After these triumphs, Edwards stepped down from the role of sporting director to work for another firm led by former Liverpool director Ian Graham as a consultant, despite interests from Premier League clubs including Chelsea and Manchester United to lead their footballing operations.
Why Edwards Returned in 2024
He joined back in 2024 as CEO of football to lead the club in the post-Jürgen Klopp era. He recruited key figures in the club's sporting department, including Richard Hughes and Julian Ward, at the top of the department. After the return of Michael Edwards, Liverpool was crowned Premier League champion again in the 2024-25 season.
Edwards is considered one of the most influential figures in the modern Liverpool side as a stern negotiator and clever businessman who brings quality players for lower prices, aiming for long-term success.
