Key Points & Highlights
  • Coventry City are spending £20m+ on Sidiki Chérif. Here is what the teenage forward brings to Frank Lampard's team.

Coventry Agrees to £20m+ deal for Sidiki Chérif

The player is already present in England, and his medicals with Coventry are scheduled for tomorrow as per Fabrice Hawkins.

Chérif's rapid rise from Angers to Fenerbahçe

He is expected to be one of the key additions for Lampard's side considering the player’s quality; the 19-year-old French-Guinean started his youth career with French clubs Olympique Saumur and Angers. After an impressive display with the reserves at Angers, he debuted for the first team on 9 January 2024 at the age of 16 years and 7 months.

He had an excellent start to the 2024-25 campaign with four goals in 19 appearances in Ligue 1, but his development was interrupted by a thigh contusion, which ruled him out from playing in the second half of the season.

In the last winter transfer window, he moved to Fenerbahçe from Angers on a deal of €25 million, which equals the club record sale for the French club. He joined them on loan with a mandatory buy clause worth €18 million. He appeared for 17 matches with Fenerbahçe and scored 3 goals.

What Chérif brings to Coventry

Sidiki is still considered a raw talent, but he possesses excellent physical strength that powers his ball-carrying by beating opponents. Chérif's biggest attacking strength is his ability to carry the ball through pressure. Rather than relying heavily on elaborate skills, he uses his pace and physicality to beat opponents and drive into dangerous areas.

So far in his career, the player has taken on multiple roles, including winger and striker, but Coventry manager Frank Lampard has yet to determine his original position, as he exhibits qualities of both a striker and a winger; however, his presence in the box is limited because he prefers to go deep and carry the ball into attacking areas.

Why the move could be crucial for Chérif's development

The move is a big investment in Chérif's potential rather than signing a finished Premier League player. He'll need time to settle in while Lampard works out the role that brings out the best in his game.

The right-footed player’s Coventry spell is really crucial in his development and the club's journey in the Premier League, as they are looking to survive in the Premier League after getting promotion from the Championship in 21 years.
