Xhaka Turns Down Chelsea Interest
Granit Xhaka has rejected Chelsea's approach and decided to remain at Sunderland despite the opportunity to reunite with Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge, according to The Athletic.
Alonso views Xhaka as an ideal fit for his possession-based system after working with the Swiss international during Bayer Leverkusen's successful spell, making him one of Chelsea's priority midfield targets this summer.
Sunderland Reject Chelsea's Opening Bid
Earlier reports suggested that Xhaka had agreed to personal terms with Chelsea for a potential move in the summer as a priority signing for Xabi Alonso. Chelsea submitted an opening £8 million bid to Sunderland, but the bid was immediately rejected, and the team took a firm stand, saying they will not entertain any bid for the player.
Sunderland made it clear they had no intention of selling one of their most influential players as the club prepares for its first-ever Europa League campaign. After discussions with the club, Xhaka changed his stance on leaving the club and decided to continue with the Black Cats.

The 33-year-old midfielder joined Sunderland last summer following their promotion from the Championship to the Premier League, and then Xhaka became the midfield leader in the midfield of Sunderland throughout last season to finish in 7th place and secure the first-ever Europa League football in the team’s history.
