Aston Villa has shortlisted Atlético Madrid left-back Matteo Ruggeri as they search for a replacement for Lucas Digne, according to The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell. Digne left Aston Villa after Paris Saint-Germain triggered his release clause of £8.5 million after his impressive World Cup campaign with the French national team.
Unai Emery is reportedly seeking a physically strong left-back capable of competing with Ian Maatsen throughout a demanding campaign. Ruggeri fits the profile, as he has a 187 cm height along with solid physical strength and defensive awareness.

Ruggeri joined Atlético last year from Atalanta on a long-term contract of 5 years with Los Rojiblancos. He featured in 47 games in his debut season with Atlético Madrid, providing 7 assists to the team.
