Aston Villa Hijack Newcastle's Move

Aston Villa has reportedly hijacked Newcastle United's move for Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi after reaching an agreement with both the player and SC Freiburg, according to Florian Plettenberg.

Champions League Football Proves Decisive

Newcastle United were the front runners to sign the World Cup star of Switzerland from SC Freiburg after agreeing to the deal with the club for a package of €60 million and reaching a verbal agreement with the player, but later Aston Villa entered the race, offering Champions League football for the player to defeat Newcastle United in the race.

Newcastle's failure to qualify for European competition weakened their position despite already agreeing a transfer fee with Freiburg. Aston Villa's offer of Champions League football ultimately proved decisive.

Onana Injury Accelerates Villa's Interest

Aston Villa was monitoring the player from the beginning but heightened their interest after the knee injury sustained by Unai Emery's key midfielder Amadou Onana in the World Cup pre-quarters against the USA. Onana ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, which will force him to be benched for at least 6 to 9 months.

The long-term injury of Onana and later the departure of Youri Tielemans are the major reasons behind Villa's pursuit of Johan Manzambi. Villa outbid Newcastle United by submitting a bid of €70 million to SC Freiburg to bring him to Villa Park.

Why Johan Manzambi Fits Unai Emery's System

The 20-year-old will be a major asset for Unai Emery in the squad with his versatility on the pitch, ball-carrying, tactical awareness, and eye for the goal. Manzambi has an impressive goal record with both club and country; he became one of the breakthrough stars in the FIFA World Cup 2026 with 3 goals and 2 assists from 4 matches despite missing the pre-quarters and quarterfinals.

Newcastle Forced Back Into the Transfer Market

Missing out on Manzambi represents another setback for Newcastle's midfield rebuild, forcing the club to explore alternative targets after losing one of Europe's most promising young midfielders.
