AC Milan Decided to Appoint Amorim
AC Milan begins their rebuild for a new season with the decision to appoint former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim as the new head coach of the I Rossoneri, reports Fabrizio Romano
The Portuguese manager agreed to sign a contract until June 2028 plus an option to extend for another year with AC Milan.
Failed Manager Search
Zlatan Ibrahimović and Cardinale had different priorities for the manager role in the beginning. They did several rounds of discussion with managers, including Andoni Iraola and Ralf Ragnick, but both managers rejected the offers from AC Milan, which led the management to approach Ruben Amorim, who is currently available after his departure from Manchester United.
Milan’s Recent Struggles
AC Milan had disappointing results in the last two seasons under three different managers: Paulo Fonseca, Sérgio Conceição, and Massimiliano Allegri. After two dreadful seasons AC Milan are planning to bring in a high-profile manager, which led them to pursue a deal for Ruben Amorim after failing in the pursuit of Iroala and Ralf Rangnick.
Sporting Success Story
Ruben Amorim started his managerial career in Portugal and earned worldwide recognition for his work at Sporting CP with a 3-4-3 formation. He won 2 league titles with Sporting CP in his 4-year tenure with the team.
Difficult Man United Spell
On 1 November 2024, he joined Manchester United as the new head coach but failed to replicate his success with Sporting CP. He was sacked from United on January 5, 2026, after 24 wins, 18 draws, and 21 losses in 63 games, with a winning percentage of 38%.
He received criticism from fans and pundits for his favoritism towards some players and lack of flexibility in formations. He sticks to 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 the majority of the times even if the results are not favorable to the team.
Why Milan Chose Him
From an editorial perspective, Ruben Amorim has the chance to thrive as AC Milan manager in Italy if Milan is able to sign players that suit Amorim's demands. Unlike in the Premier League, Serie A managers are able to generate results in the league with a similar system to Ruben Amorim's. Antonio Conte and Simeone Inzaghi are the latest examples of this. Both managers had success in Italy with the 3-at-the-back formation.
